Number 1: The Curious Farmer

A positive carbon story  

This podcast features Tasmanian farmers Kate and Iain Field of Leap Farm. In this episode, Kate & Iain swap seats and Iain chats to Kate about their carbon positive story. They explain how they calculated their net greenhouse gas emissions, as well as their carbon sequestration. They also talk about why increasing carbon in your soil helps to build a strong, resilient farm (and what a resilient farm is). There are some tips and tricks and plenty of hope for the future in farming, whether you’re big, tiny, or somewhere in between. It’s a goodie for anyone wondering what carbon farming is all about from a ground-up perspective.  

Number 2: Australian Farming Institute

Soil Carbon Farming: Where are the Benefits? 

The Australian Farm Institute is an independent institute leading farm policy discussions for agriculture. In August 2021 the AFI released an occasional paper entitled ‘A landholder’s guide to participate in soil carbon farming in Australia’ – in which the authors looked at the benefits and costs to landholders of participating in soil carbon farming in Australia.  

The AFI executive director Richard Heath chatted with the paper’s authors Prof. Robert White, Brian Davidson and Richard Eckard in this episode of the AFI podcast. 

Number 3: Soils For Life

The Great Soil Carbon Catalyst 

Soils for Life is a registered charity advocating for the empowerment of farmers to rebuild and restore soils, and in doing so, believes that Australia can mitigate and adapt to climate change and other challenges while producing healthy, plentiful food and fibre in ways that are good for farmers, consumers and the planet. In 2021 they launched their own podcast project with an episode entitled ‘The Great Soil Carbon Catalyst?’ – in which they talked to farmers, scientists, and policymakers to explore the soil carbon opportunity here in Australia. The episode features interviews with carbon farmer Stuart Austin of Wilmot Cattle Co, renowned soil scientist Dr Susan Orgill and Dr Michael Crawford, CEO, of Soil CRC. 

Number 4 & 5: Marcus Oldham College’s Ag Talk – The Soil Carbon Series  

The Carbon Market and what it means to Australian farmers with Oscar Pearse 

Soil Carbon – Sorting the wheat from the chaff with Professor Richard Eckard 

Marcus Oldham College’s Agtalk podcast series has included several episodes on Carbon Farming over the years. In late 2021, in response to the increased discussion around how Australian primary producers looking to do the best for their country & potentially find alternative sources of income, can access the carbon market when potentially they cannot establish their carbon credentials enough, has led the Agtalk team to repackage some of their carbon focused podcasts and create the Soil Carbon Series.

The huge amount of information (some questionable) in circulation at the moment has highlighted that this is a very complex area with potentially, significant land mines for unsuspecting farmers who enter carbon farming schemes in good faith. 

The two podcasts delve into the question of carbon, one from a trading perspective and the other from a soil science perspective. Taken together they provide listeners with a robust understanding of the main areas of concern when it comes to carbon farming.
